US retailers temporarily shut stores, push online shopping

Several US retailers have temporarily closed their outlets for minimum two weeks from March 17 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and will pay their employees for the period of the shutdown. Most will continue to monitor the situation and follow guidance from the Centres of Disease Control (CDC) and the state and federal governments to reassess the situation.
Many have implemented work from home for select employees and almost every such company is encouraging customers to continue shopping online.
PVH Corp, which owns brand like Calvin Klein and Van Heusen, has closed its retail stores across North America and Europe, effective March 17 through March 29. Many of the company-operated stores across the Asia Pacific region have re-opened, although stores in some regions are operating on reduced hours.
Vince Holding Corp, which owns three brands—Vince, Rebecca Taylor and Parker—closed all Vince and Rebecca Taylor stores in North America and the United Kingdom from March 17 till March 29.
Omni-channel specialty retailer for women Chico's FAS, which owns the brands Chico's, White House Black Market, Soma and TellTale, has closed all retail stores across North America for the next two weeks. The company had taken steps offering remote working arrangements and enhanced safety protocols at their distribution centres and corporate offices.
Footwear and apparel retailer Tilly’s closed all 239 of its stores across the United States beginning March 18 till March 27.
Premier omni-channel fashion retailer Macy’s closed all its stores from March 17 till March 31. These include all Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Bluemercury, Macy’s Backstage, Bloomingdales the Outlet and Market by Macy’s stores.
Guess, which designs, markets, distributes and licenses a lifestyle collection of contemporary apparel, denim, handbags, watches, eyewear, footwear and other consumer products, has closed all of its retail stores in the United States and Canada from March 17 to March 27.
J. C. Penney Company closed its stores and business offices till April 2. Kontoor Brands, which owns Wrangler and Lee, closed all retail locations across North America and Europe beginning March 18 till March 27.
Walmart US stores will adjust operating hours to 7 am-8:30 pm. Stores that open later than 7 a.m. will continue their regular starting hours. This will further help associates restock the shelves for customers while continuing to clean and sanitise the store. The company is also offering special shopping hours. From March 24 till April 28, Walmart stores will host an hour-long senior shopping event every Tuesday for customers aged 60 and older.
