Following reports that Pou Chen Corp could not guarantee that its 70,000 workers stayed a safe distance from one another, the company has been temporarily shut down by the government.
According to Reuters and local media, the company — said to be the world’s largest maker of athletic shoes — was operating three shifts a day without complying with local rules on social distancing. Ho Chi Minh City, concerned about the impact an outbreak of coronavirus would have on Pou Chen employees as well as those at nearby businesses and in the surrounding provinces, had requested approval to suspend production from the Vietnamese prime minister.
Pou Chen produces more than 300 million pairs of shoes a year, according to its website, including footwear for Nike, Adidas and New Balance.
